The Explorer programme is designed to integrate Team Leaders in a manufacturing environment into the management population, and to enable them to play a key leadership role. The programme design for Explorer won Highly Commended at the National Training awards for its impact.
The extract below from our submission for the award describes the Explorer programme's ethos and objectives:
This training was initiated by line managers who felt that the Team Leader population were not being offered enough support and the right training in their role as people managers and as a consequence were not able to perform as well for the business as they should. Historically many Team Leaders had been promoted into the role with no managerial training and did not have a set of skills/tools to call on.
The key challenges in this training came from the current culture and attitudes on site not from the list of skills to be developed. [Company] has a strong hierarchy and a negative attitude towards management from the shop floor. The key challenge was how to make the team leaders feel and act as part of the management community whilst retaining their strong links with the operator in their teams. Team Leaders must be able to use the skills they develop to tackle the motivation and attitude of their team members.
We knew there could be resistance to learning from this group of people and that they might easily feel intimidated by formal or academic learning.
Success was described as; seeing evidence that the Team leaders saw themselves as part of the management community; used the skills they had developed to address performance issues, initiate and motivate change, understand strategic initiatives and how and why they impact at a local level, manage and develop their teams
Specific skills identified included how to:
ClearWorth worked closely with an internal committee to design and run this programme. The key new things we bought to this programme were the questionnaires and we ensured the Team Leaders and Managers had shared learning conversations. The site leadership team was involved via actively sharing their experience as well as marking and giving feedback on the assignments undertaken in each module.
Read feedback from delegates and their managers about the Explorer programme, taken at the end of the Learning Review in case studies.
