What Guides our Thinking?

Clive Hook

I am completely clear that learning is a survival skill in today's organisations not a "nice to have".  Managers, leaders, teams and corporations who do not learn do not survive.  I'm passionate about helping people and organisations learn and develop - but it's not my job to convince them it's a good idea...

I realise that learning is difficult when times are hard and time is short.  I think it is everyone's responsibility to learn something every day..it doesn't have to be about work.  A new word, a new place to visit, a historical fact, a stirred memeory, a connection with a new person, a realisation that you take something for granted or habitually do something without thinking about it a new situation that you have avoided in the past, a question that you don't know the answer to - all rich sources of learning and development.

As I reflect on what both influences my approach to learning and development and also my own motivation there are a few things which have had a lasting impact.  The first was doing my university degree and post graduate by self managed learning.  You set your own goals, you workout, with support from your tutors, how you will assess your work and what criteria you need to meet in order to deliver work at degree or PG standard, and then you work out how to do it.  As part of my journey I was significantly influenced by the work of Peter Senge and Robert Fritz with whom I have done extensive training.  Their work sparked a continuing interest in how people think and the impact of this on organisations.

I'm currently fascinated by the brain, how it works and the impact of this on leadership and organisations.  New information is arriving from the field of neuroscience which I believe will be invaluable in helping people learn to think and to cope better with change and stress while working more effectively.

I'm a certified MBTI trainer and coach, my style pulls on proven tools and techniques, I enjoy integrating new insights and learning into what we do, although I would say I am consistently pragmatic in my approach to what I do.
